Ad Bombs, Ad Jails, and Betting Gateways: Characterizing Harm and Novel Dark Patterns from Popular Mobile Apps in Brazil

This data set contains: A spreadsheet with the overall results and, for each app category, the prevalence of Deceptive Patterns identified in 250 trending mobile apps: “DP Research Database.xlsx.” Screenshots of apps that contained references to, or allowed users to engage in, gambling-related activities. All of these belong to the Social app category: “MeetClub.png,” “KakoLive (Frame A).png,” and “KakoLive (Frame B).png”. Two documents presenting the Deceptive Patterns ontology by Gray et al. (2024), expanded with four newly identified low-level patterns (highlighted in blue): “Extended ontology.xlsx”, “Extended ontology – 1. Ontology.pdf”.
