Building uncertainty tolerance (UT), a blueprint for navigating uncertainty in the basic sciences

This thesis investigates how scientists (at different career stages) in the basic sciences field experience and navigate uncertainty. This involves understanding what the causes of uncertainty for these scientists are, how they navigate the uncertainty, and how they respond to the uncertainty. Currently, there is no existing literature on uncertainty tolerance in this field of research. The findings of this thesis contribute two models of uncertainty tolerance that provide a blueprint and framework for helping scientists navigate uncertainty successfully in their careers.
