"To achieve coherent transmission, it is necessary to estimate the phases of the transmitting RF chains of an ULA. These phases can be obtained by transmitting a synchronization signal in TDMA either over the air to a receiver or by wire to a local RF chain that serves as reference. Both approaches yield TX chain phase estimates, under the assumption that the channel is known and compensated for, that can be used in precoding to achieve coherent transmission. However the reliability of the phase estimates differ in both scenarios. Therefore a measurement of the phases in both scenarios is conducted to allow for quantitative comparison of synchronization approaches. The measurements are conducted with USRP X310 model 2944R and the GSPDO used for time\/frequency sync. is the Meinberg 170 MP satellite receiver."
