NRS-19876 | Valuation book [Urana Shire Council]

This series of valuation books from the Urana Shire Council records the valuation of properties as assessed. The Municipalities Act, 1867 (31 Vic. Act No. 12) required all rateable property to be valued annually 'by two competent persons to be styled valuers'. The valuers were to furnish declarations to the Mayor that the valuations were impartial and made according to their best judgement. The valuers were empowered to ascertain from the owners or occupants of rateable premises all of the information required to be entered into the rate books. Appeal against valuation decisions could be heard by two or more judges of the Court of Petty Sessions.These valuation books consist of the following information: the name and address of both the owner and occupier, county, street name, parish, subdivision, unimproved value, improved value, assessed annual value and date and initials of valuers.
