Sea level rise due to global climate change is threatening coastal island biodiversity and soil carbon stocks, therefore, based on Inner Lingding Island, Guangdong Province, we investigated the response mechanisms of soil microbiome, macrogenome and metabolome functions in coastal wetlands to coastal-inland salinity gradients. The results demonstrate that elevated salinity due to sea level rise alters microbial community diversity and reduces the functional genes of carbon metabolism, which leads to a reduction in the potential of microorganisms to participate in organic matter metabolism.
