A constantly regenerating layer of intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) forms a physical barrier between the intestinal lumen and the bowel wall, absorbing nutrients and governing mucosal immune defence. Increased IEC death has been linked to intestinal mucosal dysfunction and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). The function of the Bcl-2 family member myeloid cell leukemia 1 (Mcl-1) protein within IEC is largely unknown.
