4,5-Dimethyl-2-bromophosphinine reacts with [Ru(η5-C5Me5)(η4-C6H10)Cl], in the presence of AgBF4, to afford depending on the reaction conditions complexes resulting from the substitution of the chloride or the diene ligand. Under the same experimental conditions, reactions with the more sterically hindered 2,6-bis(trimethylsilyl)phosphinines yield the sandwich [Ru(η5-C5Me5)(η6-phosphinine)][BF4] cationic complexes.
