Alcaligenes aquatilis strain AS1 is a novel heterotrophic nitrifier-aerobic denitrifier isolated from the aerobic activated sludge. It showed a great capability of ammonia removal under a wide range of environmental conditions, and could remove more than 90% of ammonia nitrogen in the treatment of actual piggery wastewater with high amonia concentrations, which implies the application potential of AS1 in treating high-ammonia wastewater. The genome of AS1 was sequencing to reveal the genes related to nitrogen metabolism and help us to understand the pathways involved in heterotrophic nitrification and aerobic denitrification.
