The goal of the study was to sequence cardinal (phenoxazinone synthase, phs) gene in two strains of Drosophila melanogaster, the wild-type strain Canton-S (CS) and the mutant cardinal 1 (cd1) with 3-hydroxykynurenine (3HOK) accumulation. PHS catalyzes 3HOK dimerization, which is impaired in cd1, presumably due to some mutations in phs gene.
