Dataset for: Demanding energy-efficient software: how an energy label can empower users to drive green computing adoption

This dataset contains the anonymized responses to a survey on software energy consumption (SEC) awareness conducted as part of the research reported in: Leal, K., Gutiérrez Martínez, J.M., de Marcos Ortega, L., Rodríguez, D. "Demanding energy-efficient software: how an energy label can empower users to drive green computing adoption." Computers in Human Behavior (under review), 2026. The survey instrument (items I1–I10) was administered in English and Spanish across five independent data collection campaigns targeting IT students, experienced IT professionals, IT researchers, recent graduates, and general users of applications. A total of 151 valid responses were collected. The dataset includes the following variables: I1: Respondent profile (IT student, experienced IT, IT researcher, recent IT graduate, user of applications) I2: Age range (up to 18, 18–25, 26–40, 41–60, more than 60) I3: Gender (male, female, prefer not to answer) I4: Awareness that software choices affect hardware energy consumption (Yes / No / I do not care) I5: Knowledge of actual software energy consumption (raw response and binary coding) I8: Perceived limitations for considering SEC in own developments (multiple response) I9: Perceived reasons why SEC is not used in software development (multiple response) I10: Preferred initiatives to improve SEC awareness in society (multiple response, max. 2 selections) No personally identifiable information is included. The survey was conducted anonymously via Microsoft Forms.
