The mechanism of maternal protein degradation in preimplantation embryos is not fully understood. It is currently believed that maternal proteins are mainly degraded by the ubiquitin-proteasome system. Our work provides new insights into new forms of ubiquitination in regulating mammalian embryo development, and may contribute to further investigation of female infertility pathology.
