Inonotus obliquus, or commonly known as chaga mushroom, is a pathogen of birch tree species, mainly. It has been shown that both the pathogen and the hosts (silver birch), are producing the same secondary metabolites, betulinate compounds. The production of the same betulinate compounds in silver birch (Betula pendula), and other plant species, is well studied, but no similar study have been conducted in fungal species. Here we sequenced, assembled, and annotated the genome of chaga mushroom in order to study the evolutionary background behind the betulinate biosynthesis pathway in comparison to silver birch.
