Put simply, all valid instantaneous friction velocities estimated from 10-meter u and v component hourly wind speeds were substituted into aeolian sediment transport physical equations for derivations. Referencing existing studies, we further improved the conceptual framework of sediment transport flux, and simplified the definitions of three core concepts: flux potential (FP), resultant flux potential (RFP), and azimuthal flux potential (with 16 specific azimuthal flux variants including FP_N, FP_NNE, FP_NE, FP_NEE, FP_E, FP_EES, FP_ES, FP_ESS, FP_S, FP_SSW, FP_WS, FP_WWS, FP_W, FP_WWN, FP_NW, and FP_NNW). Specifically, FP refers to the total sediment transport flux across all azimuths; RFP is the resultant flux potential, representing the net sediment transport flux under winds of varying directions; RFD stands for the resultant flux direction, indicating the net orientation of the sediment flux; FDV is the directional variability, defined as the ratio of RFP to FP, which signifies that the flux is concentrated toward a single direction (close to 1) or distributed across multiple directions (close to 0); FP_azimuth refers to the azimuthal sediment transport flux, where the sum of all 16 azimuthal fluxes equals the total sediment transport flux (FP); RDP_N or RDP_E projects the sediment transport fluxes at the 16 azimuths onto the true north or true east azimuth, respectively, for the calculation of RFP, RFD, and the final FDV (Li et al., 2024). The wind speed and direction data derived from 10-meter height u and v component wind speeds are sourced from 0.1° hourly ERA5-Land wind datasets spanning 1950–2025 and 0.25° hourly ERA5 wind datasets spanning 1940–2025.
