Afrobarometer: Round I Survey of Ghana, July 1999

The Afrobarometer is a research instrument that measures the social, political, and economic atmosphere in Africa. This Afrobarometer survey was designed to assess attitudes toward democracy and government in Ghana. Respondents from different regions of the country were interviewed, and the languages spoken were noted. Regions of Ghana covered by the survey included the Greater Accra, Volta, Northern, Brong-Ahafo, Ashanti, Western, Eastern, Central, Upper East, and Upper West regions. Languages spoken included Akan, Ewe, Hausa, Guan, Mossi, and others for a total count of 43 languages. Most of the survey dealt with viewpoints regarding different aspects of government in Ghana, including attitudes toward the old regiment, political life and membership in organizations, the meaning of the word "democracy," trustworthiness of the government, responsibility of the government toward its citizens, and knowledge and opinions of the Economic Recovery Program (ERP). Additional data were gathered on modernization of the family dwelling, literacy in English, and educational attainment. Information was also elicited on whether the respondent was a registered voter, how secure he or she felt in the community, and how the respondent viewed the December 1996 election in Ghana. Background information on respondents includes gender, age, and number of adults in each household (aged over 18 years).
