2009-2022 coastal CTDs from the southern Tyrrhenian Sea to the western Ligurian Sea (EVATIR cruises)

Twelve coastal oceanographic cruises were organized starting from western Sicily (southern Tyrrhenian Sea) to western Ligurian Sea on the shelf along the continental Italian coast between August 2009 and September 2022 by the Italian National Research Council (CNR) and the acquisition of hundreds of hydrological vertical profiles every year by a SBE 911plus V 5.1g. Data of pressure (Digiquartz with TC), conductivity (SBE-4 sensor, resolution of 3 x 10-4 S/m), temperature (SBE-3/F thermometer, resolution of 0.00015 °C/bit at -1 °C or 0.00018 °C/bit at 31 °C), dissolved oxygen (DO; SBE-43 polarographic membrane sensor with a range of 120% of surface saturation and an accuracy of ±2% of saturation), have been acquired along vertical profiles in all cruises. In 2011 the data from the redundant sensors of temperature, conductivity and dissolved oxygen substituted those from the primary sensors due to a better data quality. Turbidity was acquired during the cruises in 2011 by a SBE ECO-FLNTU sensor, and in 2013, 2016 and from 2019 to 2022 by a WET Labs ECO-NTU. Chlorophyll-a fluorescence (Chl-a; Chelsea Aqua 3 Con in ug/l) reported as Relative Fluorescence Unit from 2009 to 2013 and from 2020 to 2022. The pH/Redox sensor (SBE27) is available during cruises in 2009, 2013 and 2016. Data were quality checked and processed by the Sea-Bird Seasoft© software, and the coarse errors corrected. A further visual check was carried out on metadata and plotted data, here to identify spikes and sensors’ shifts. In all cruises the 35-meter-long R/V G. Dallaporta was used. The data set is provided per cruise as Ocean Data View (ODV, Schlitzer, 2024) Spreadsheet files in TXT format where missing data values are set to -1.e10 and the derived variable Depth [salt water, m] is calculated in all cruises. The Evatir cruises were carried out as part of both the Project ‘Extension of the Medias (Mediterranean International Acoustic Survey) Acoustic Campaign in the Geographical Sub Areas (GSA) 9 (Ligurian Sea and Northern Tyrrhenian Sea) and 10 (Central and Southern Tyrrhenian Sea)’ and the MEDIAS (MEDiterranean International Acoustic Survey), an integral part of the European Data Collection Framework (Council Regulation (EC) N° 199/2008).
