(What the Disaster Brought into the Classroom— A Retrospective Ethnography of Memory, Embodiment, and Safety in Post-Disaster Primary Education)
Abstract (English) This archive consists of a retrospective ethnographic account and analysis written by an individual who began primary school immediately after a major disaster. Drawing on experiences at a public elementary school in suburban Japan between 2011 and 2017, the material documents episodes such as evacuation drills, narratives surrounding transfer students from affected areas, risk communication related to school trips, embodied responses to frequent aftershocks, and the visible renovation of earthquake-resistant facilities. The analysis focuses on how, in post-disaster primary education, collective memory became repeatedly invoked and semi-institutionalized, how benevolence and surveillance coexisted in the treatment of children, how pupils were positioned as mediators of risk communication to their families, and how norms of safety were internalized at the level of the body. While based on a single case and not intended for generalization, this archive illustrates how disaster experiences continued to shape everyday educational spaces long after the immediate emergency had passed.
