2024年 現役兵の数が世界最大の軍隊

2024年1月時点で約200万人の現役兵員を擁していた中国軍は、世界で最大規模の軍隊です。現役兵員数においての上位5カ国は中国、インド、米国、北朝鮮、ロシアです。
「現役」と「予備役」の違いについて
「現役」兵は米国では「アクティブデューティー（Active Duty）」、英国では「アクティブサービス（Active Service）」とも呼ばれ、軍での仕事が専業です。「予備役」は、「現役」とは対照的に軍人としての職務と民間の職業を兼務しています。米国では現役軍人数が全体の圧倒的多数を占めています。
最強の軍隊とは
一国の軍隊の強さは、兵力だけではなく、軍備・兵器の数とその質によって決まります。例えば兵員数のみに着目すると、ロシアやアメリカの核弾頭保有数が他国より圧倒的に多いことが加味されません。軍事費には人件費と設備維持費が含まれるため、各国の軍事費の総額も軍隊の強さを示すものとなります。軍事費が最も多い国は米国で、年間予算額は2位の中国の約3倍に達します。

As of January 2024, the Chinese military, with approximately 2 million active personnel, is the largest in the world. The top five countries by active personnel are China, India, the United States, North Korea, and Russia. 'Active duty' and 'reserve' are distinct terms in military service. In the United States, active-duty personnel are referred to as 'active duty,' and in the United Kingdom, as 'active service,' indicating that their work in the military is their full-time profession. Conversely, reserves, as compared to active duty, are military personnel who hold civilian jobs in addition to their military duties. In the United States, active-duty personnel constitute the overwhelming majority of the total. The strength of a military does not solely depend on the number of personnel but also on the quantity and quality of its equipment and weaponry. For instance, focusing solely on personnel numbers fails to account for the overwhelming number of nuclear warheads held by Russia and the United States. Military expenditure includes personnel costs and maintenance expenses, and thus, the total military expenditure of a country also serves as an indicator of its military strength. The United States has the highest military expenditure, with its annual budget being about three times that of China, which ranks second.
