Data supporting traffic flow optimization analysis is generated from vehicle flow data collected by roadside perception devices such as cameras and radars. This dataset can assist traffic management authorities in optimizing traffic light timing plans at intersections, formulating evidence-based congestion mitigation strategies, and alleviating traffic congestion.
Vehicle trajectories collected by roadside perception devices (e.g., cameras, radars) undergo preprocessing to remove abnormal trajectory points, thereby generating the final traffic flow dataset. The dataset includes the following data fields: travel time (in seconds), travel speed (in kilometers per hour), delay time (in seconds), traffic efficiency (ranging from 0 to 100, where intervals [0, 15), [15, 30), [30, 60), and [60, 100] correspond to severe congestion, moderate congestion, mild congestion, and unobstructed traffic flow, respectively), congestion duration (in seconds), congestion mileage (in meters), and the confidence score for each indicator (ranging from 0 to 100, with a higher value indicating greater credibility).
First, the confidence score indicates the reliability and accuracy of the corresponding performance indicator. The average travel time with traffic light waiting for the current time slice refers to the average additional time incurred by vehicles when passing a specific road segment within a given time slice (e.g., a 5-minute or 15-minute interval) due to waiting for traffic lights. The average travel time without traffic light waiting for the current time slice: this indicator excludes the time spent waiting for traffic lights and only calculates the actual travel time of vehicles on the road. It represents the average time required for a vehicle to traverse a specific road segment in the absence of traffic lights.
Similarly to the above definitions, travel speed refers to the speed at which vehicles pass through an intersection, regardless of whether they are waiting for traffic lights or not. Delay time is the difference between the actual time taken for a vehicle to pass through an intersection and the free-flow travel time. Traffic efficiency is defined as the passage efficiency of vehicles through the intersection, calculated using the formula: 100 × (actual speed / steady-state speed). Congestion duration refers to the total time during which vehicles experience congestion within a specified period, while congestion mileage refers to the total distance (in kilometers) that vehicles spend in congestion within the same period.
The above indicator data can be used to evaluate the timing plan of intersection traffic lights, enabling timely adjustments to the signal timing to ensure optimal traffic passage efficiency.
