Replication data for: La renovación de las élites presidenciales en America Latina, 1900-2007

This paper assesses the transformation of Latin American ruling elites using a database of 566 presidents in 19 countries between 1900 and 2007. The paper introduces four types of elite dynamics (replacement, renovation, reconversion, and stagnation) and employs two simple indicators--the age of the president and the age of the ruling party--to operationalize this typology. Based on an analysis of fuzzy sets, I argue that a comparable level of stagnation of the Latin American ruling class was not present since the 1930s, and conclude that a renovation of the regional leadership is likely in the medium run.
