Ossabaw Island Tabby Quaters Conditions Assessment and Recommendations for Interpretation and Treatment

In November 2003, the Ossabaw Island Foundation was awarded a $400,000 grant from Save America's Treasures to restore three former slave cabins on Ossabaw Island, Georgia, located at the North End Plantation. Save America's Treasures (SAT) is a national
program to protect the country's historic and cultural treasures and it operates as a public­ private partnership between the National Park Service and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Among its stated goals are the fostering of pride in American heritage and the education of citizens about preservation issues facing the buildings that represent the nation's diverse cultural legacy. Each SAT grant requires a dollar-for-dollar match, which can be cash, donated services, or use of equipment.
In October 2004, a group of students in the Heritage Preservation program at Georgia State University donated their services to the Ossabaw Island Foundation in partial fulfillment of the matching dollar requirement. Professor Richard Laub, Director of the Heritage Preservation Program, led eleven students from his Conservation of Historic Building Materials class to Ossabaw Island to work on the three former slave quarters.
