Dataset for modeling farmers’ intention to use safe pesticides in tobacco farming in Central Malawi: Application of an extended Theory of Planned Behavior

To uncover sufficient and "must have" factors within the Theory of Planned Behavior constructs — without which farmers' intention to use safe pesticides would not occur — we collected data, through a structured questionnaire, from 273 tobacco farmers in the Central Malawi. A stratified random sampling and simple random sampling techniques were used to select respondents.
To measure the TPB constructs, this study reviewed existing literature and adapted validated items from previous research. Farmers indicated the extent of their opinions using a 5-point Likert scale (1= strongly disagree, 2= disagree, 3= neither disagree nor agree, 4= agree, 5= strongly agree).
Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and Necessary Condition Analysis (NCA) were performed to establish the probabilistic sufficiency factors and necessary conditions, respectively. The novel combined Importance-Performance Map Analysis (cIPMA) was used to formulate practical recommendations.
