Sediment cores were taken at a low and a high temperature site within the shallow-sea hydrothermal vent Hot Lake (Panarea, Italy). Metagenomes of a size of ~203 and 186 Mbp were determined for the surface sediment layer (0-2 cm). The dataset was analysed with respect to taxonomic distribution as well as the presence and phylogentic affiliation of key genes of the carbon, sulfur and nitrogen cycle.
