Effective treatment of municipal wastewater is essential to protecting human and ecosystem health. Conventional processes rely on a complex microbial community to treat wastewater; however, this community is still largely uncharacterised. To characterise the origin, community dynamics and fate of wastewater treatment associated microbes, three steps of a municipal wastewater treatment plant were assessed: untreated primary wastewater, activated sludge, and post-treatment effluent.
