Data from: Root depth and development across succession after peat mining in northern Japan

This dataset supports a study of species-specific vertical root distribution across vegetation succession in a post-mined peatland in Sarobetsu mire, Hokkaido, northern Japan. Data include root-intersection measurements derived from in situ flatbed-scanner images collected during 2021–2024 in three successional habitats: Rhynchospora alba sedgeland, Moliniopsis japonica grassland, and Sphagnum vegetation. The dataset also includes aboveground vegetation surveys, groundwater-table depth, peat moisture, peat temperature and root scan images. R scripts reproduce the generalized linear mixed-effects models and generate the graphical panels used in the manuscript.
