Predicting Factors of English Writing Proficiency of Year 6 Primary School Students in Slovenia

The data comprise six files: Pocutje.csv consists of 768 lines containing the values of Year 6 students' answers to the questionnaire on their well-being during thier English lessons, labelled as POC in the original in Slovenian. Only the students/units without missing data are regarded Pocutje_variables.csv includes the name, label, description, type and value of each particular variable in the file Pocutje.csv. Vprasalnik.csv includes 765 lines encompassing the values of the students' answers to the questionnaire on themselves with special attention to learning EFL (labelled as the VUUTJPA questionnaire in the original in the Slovenian language). Only the students/units without missing data are regarded. Vprasalnik_variables.csv includes the name, label, description, type and value of each particular variable in the file Vprasalnik.csv. The questionnaire Priloge Moje počutje pri pouku angleščine.pdf include 22 statements, for which pupils expressed their level of agreement using a five-point Likert scale. Interested users are advised to consult the doctoral thesis listed under point 5 for more detailed information about the questionnaire. The questionnaire used in our research is a translation into Slovene from the original English version. The questionnaire Priloge Vprašalnik o učencih in učenju TJA.pdf include several sets of variables representing the pupils’ background: demographic variables; hours of study for the test and weekly hours for homework as time-related variables; variables relating to the home environment; the use of information and communication technology for learning foreign languages during the pupils’ leasure time; exposure to English as a foreign language during leisure time and through school class visits; the system-related variables concerning the starting time of learning English (kindergarten/school) and the range of languages the pupils had already learnt at school; variables relating to the school environment associated with foreign languages (projects with foreign schools, competitions, the European Day of Languages, language workshops outside the regular lessons, penfriend correspondence through the school with pupils from abroad, school excursions , the pupils’ frequency of speaking English during lessons, frequency of using audio/audio-visual materials in English during lessons, frequency of using newspapers, magazines, etc. during lessons, frequency of using the internet, computer programmes, language laboratories, English textbooks, extensive reading in English during instruction, and materials prepared by the teacher); perceived usefulness and perceived difficulty of learning English as pupils’ attitudes; and interest in writing during English lessons.
