Oral tradition on the Island of Hawai'i relays a story of the hunting of birds from their
nesting grounds inside lava blister pits. A soil sample from the cavity of a lava blister pit on the
Island of Hawai'i was examined microscopically for pollen, starch, phytoliths, feathers, and
tested for nitrogen and phosphates.
