Bighead carp (Hypophthalmichthys nobilis) and silver carp (H. molitrix) (Asian carps), native to China, are the most important species in aquaculture for over 1,200 years. The two species have been widely introduced into more than 70 countries for aquaculture and/or plankton control. Bighead and silver carps were initially introduced into the U.S. in the early 1970s. Both species escaped from confinement and were found in the wild in the early 1980s, and have since become extremely abundant in the Mississippi River Basin.
