Bacillus niacini is a member of a small, yet diverse, group of bacteria able to catabolize nicotinic acid. We sequenced its genome to determine the nicotinate degrading gene cluster and to understand the evolution of its namesake phenotype that appears unique amongst species in its phylogenetic neighborhood.
