Japanese encephalitis virus persists in reproductive tissues of amplifying and dead-end hosts

We showed that Japanese encephalitis virus efficiently replicates in different reproductive tissues/cells of both animal reservoir (pigs) and humans, causing molecular pathology. Thus, further studies are needed to better understand the interactions of flaviviruses with reproductive tissues, risks for sexual transmission in humans, and how persistent infection affects female reproductive functions.
