In ant Harpegnathos saltator, workers can become the reproductive gamergates in a queenless condition. During the worker-to-gamergate transition, juvenile hormone signaling decreases but ovarian ecdysone production increases in the gamergate. Injecting juvenile hormone analog (JHA or methoprene) induces expression of worker-biased genes in the brain , while ecydsone promotes expression of ecdysone-responsive genes in ovaries. Harpegnathos workers were injected with either solvent (EtOH), methoprene or 20-hydroxyecdysone (20E). Three tissues (the non-visual brain, abdominal fat body and ovary) from three individuls were harvested 12 hours post the injection and subjected for RNA-seq.
