VPRS 1142 Cash Books, Tolls

The Central Roads Board, the first agency concerned with the construction and maintenance of main roads and bridges, was abolished on 1 January 1858 and succeeded by the Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) which operated under the statutory control of the Board of Land and Works (VA 744).Much of the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges, especially on major roads was financed by the collection of tolls. Tolls were either collected directly or tollgates were rented to contractors to be responsible for collections. This series is a Cash Book recording the daily receipts and disbursements related to what were known as Treasury Tolls. Receipts consisted of the rents, the collections from the tolling places and the lodging of security bonds by lessees. Disbursements were for contract payments, salaries, the return of security bonds and to the Receiver of revenue.This series is summarised in VPRS 12646 Toll Ledger.VPRS 1142/P was reserialised in 2001 as part of the ARAD Project. The former units 5 and 6 are now VPRS 12679/P1 units 1 and 2 respectively.
