Journals that publish articles related to biological taxonomy

This dataset presents a curated and deduplicated list of scholarly journals relevant to taxonomy and systematics. The journals were identified using SPARQL queries on Wikidata and concept-based filtering from OpenAlex, focusing on key subject areas such as taxonomy, nomenclature, phylogenetics, and systematics. The dataset combines three complementary sources: Wikidata Subject Queries: Journals linked to taxonomic concepts (e.g. taxonomy, nomenclature) through main subject (P921) or field of work (P101). Wikidata Identifier Queries: Journals with IPNI (P2007) or ZooBank (P2008) publication identifiers. OpenAlex API: Journals tagged with the concept “Taxonomy (biology)” (C58642233). The results from each source were harmonized and merged. Identifiers and string values from Wikidata were extracted and cleaned, country Q-codes converted to ISO alpha-2 codes, and legacy OpenAlex IDs were normalized. Duplicates were removed based on combined Wikidata and OpenAlex identifiers. The script used to create this is list_journals.py in the src/supply/ directory of repo https://github.com/AgentschapPlantentuinMeise/Mapping-taxonomists. It can be rerun to regenerate this dataset. It requires a config.json file with a valid email address for OpenAlex API access and access to the download and prep_journals helper modules.
