This dataset contains raw data used for a paper published at Journal of Geophysical Research – Biogeosciences, titled “Reconciling top-down and bottom-up estimates of ecosystem respiration in a mature eucalypt forest”. The paper was co-authored by Nam Jin Noh, Alexandre A. Renchon, Jürgen Knauer, Vanessa Haverd, Jinquan Li, Anne Griebel, Craig V.M. Barton, Jinyan Yang, Debjani Sihi, Stefan K. Arndt, Eric A. Davidson, Mark G. Tjoelker, and Elise Pendall.
This study investigated seasonal patterns in field measurements, flux tower observations, and model-based components of ecosystem respiration and compared their responses to temperature changes in a dry eucalypt woodland near Sydney, Australia. This study highlights that concurrent, scaled chamber measurements validated flux tower observations to within 10%; implementing a substrate function into a land-surface model improved representation of heterotrophic respiration; and discrepancies between observations and simulations were largest for apparent temperature sensitivity of canopy and root respiration. Inconsistencies in the apparent (emergent) Q10 of Rroot, Rcanopy and Rstem between field measurements and modeled CABLE-POP outputs indicated a need for improving these components. By comparing component respiration rates between observations and model estimates, this study provides mechanistic insights that are relevant to model development.
