Plant biomass residues were found to harbor dormant anaerobic, thermophilic bacteria. The goal of this study was to understand what types of thermophilic life might persist in mesophilic biomass samples and to investigate novel carbohydrate-active enzymes from these organisms. In this project, two bacteria were isolated from wheat straw after incubation in "Low-Carbon" LC medium and "Media for Thermophilic Clostridia" MTC medium at 60C. Specifically, a (hemi)cellulolytic, anaerobic, bacterium, Thermoclostridium stercorarium RKWS1, and a non-cellulolytic anaerobic bacterium, Thermoanaerobacter sp. RKWS2, were isolated and their genomes sequenced.
