We have developed a targeted amplicon sequencing panel for the genus Anopheles that reveals the species group and species identity as well as population structure, presence of Plasmodium parasites, and species of Plasmodium parasites if any are detected in the mosquito. Through the next QQ, we will sequence half a million mosquitoes using this approach to study species diversity, population structure, and malaria transmission contributions over space and time. The ANOSPP V1.0 panel currently targets 62 mosquito nuclear loci and 2 parasite mitochondrial loci and specimens are plexed at around 800-1200 on a single MiSeq run.
