Cyanobacteria are emerging as a potential source of beneficial novel bioactive compounds but some of them also cause serious threat to water quality and public health through production of algal blooms and releasing contaminant in the water bodies. Therefore, their monitoring, prevalence and control is highly important. We identified a novel cyanobacterium Pseudanabaena punensis that was isolated from drinking water source PVC pipeline at Charholi, Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) area, Pune, Maharashtra, India. The goal of this study is to determine the potentiality of this cyanobacterium for production of bioactive and utility metabolites, multi-drug resistance, heavy metal stress tolerance and toxin production.
