Altered gut microbiota and systemic immunity in patients with comorbidities of schizophrenia and metabolic syndrome

Our present study enrolled hospitalized SZ-MetS patients (n = 114) and age- and gender-matched healthy controls (n = 111) from Quzhou (China) to compare their fecal microbiota profiles and peripheral host immunity. We also investigated their correlations between SZ-MetS-associated key functional bacteria and inflammatory cytokines, which can help to develop novel preventive, diagnostic, and therapeutic solutions for SZ-MetS. With microbiota-targeted therapy, it is possible to simultaneously treat patients with both SZ and coexisting MetS.
