Mechanical ventilation (MV) is a leading risk factor in the exacerbation or perpetuation of lung injury and fibrosis in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). However, the mechanisms involved are still not fully understood. The technique of RNA sequencing is a powerful means to detect vitally important protein-coding transcripts, long non-coding RNA (lncRNAs), on a genome-wide scale. This may provide better insight into the molecular mechanisms of the inflammatory and fibrotic response following ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI).
