Global largest methane emitters 2022, by country

China was the world's largest methane emitter in 2022, having released 55.7 million metric tons worth of methane. The United States and India ranked second and third that year, with each country emitting roughly 30 million metric tons of methane. Of the top ten largest methane emitters, four were not participants of the Global Methane Pledge. These include China, India, Russia, and Iran. Methane's global warming potential (GWP) is roughly 80 times greater than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period.
