The gut microbiome, frailty syndrome and comorbidities: a complex network in aging

Frailty is an aging-associated geriatric syndrome characterized by losing muscle mass and strength, reduced endurance, decreased physiological reserves, and cognitive impairment. It is estimated that between 4 and 27% of elders suffer from frailty, being more prone to experience a lower quality of life and a higher risk of death, hospitalization and institutionalization. During aging, the gut microbiota, the second genome, changes and could influence in the health status and trigger physiological disorders.
