Functions of Work Groups and Informal Subgroups in Relation to their Members

The study presents a comparative analysis of the degree to which work groups and informal subgroups implement six specific functions in relation to their members: (1) creating possibilities for realization of individual goals and meeting individual needs; (2) protection from external social threats; (3) informing (providing information to) members; (4) teaching members; (5) adaptation of (providing adaptive capacities to) members; and (6) providing control and regulation. The direct and indirect connections of these functions with social effectiveness (SE) and performance effectiveness (PE) of the respective groups/ subgroups are assessed.
