Spatial Organization in Battle Royale Games: A Design-Based Analysis on PUBG

Spatial organization within digital game environments plays a decisive role in shaping player behavior, strategy, and interaction. In the case of PUBG’s Erangel map, spatial forms such as central, linear, radial, clustered, and grid layouts influence how players move, engage in conflict, and make decisions during gameplay. Quantitative analyses based on 4,317 matches obtained from the official PUBG API and qualitative data collected from 75 experienced participants reveal clear behavioral patterns associated with these structures. Central and grid-based layouts generate intense combat and cognitive pressure, while clustered and radial organizations promote safer exploration and team coordination. Linear arrangements, on the other hand, enhance spatial navigation and transitional flow. By connecting architectural spatial theories with behavioral game data, the study demonstrates that spatial design serves not only as a visual construct but also as a strategic framework that directs interaction and enriches player experience.
