Checklist of the birds of Calabria (southern Italy)

We provide an updated checklist of the birds of Calabria (southern Italy), revised through 31 December 2025. Taxonomy, systematics and the sequence of orders, families and species, as well as coding for occurrence and breeding statuses, follow the CISO–COI Italian checklist. All taxa included in this list amount to 363 species and 9 subspecies, of which 336 are AERC category A (wild origin and present records since 1950), 12 are category B (only historical records), 7 are category C (naturalized: introduced/escaped), 5 are category AC and 3 are category E (escapes) (Table 1). Codes for general status refer to 258 regular, 20 irregular, 64 accidental/vagrant and 21 historical species. Codes for breeding status refer to 143 species that bred regularly, 8 that bred irregularly, 3 that were occasional breeders, 4 that are former breeders and 205 species with no evidence of breeding in Calabria or whose breeding there has not been confirmed. For each taxon we also report whether it is included in Annex I of Directive 2009/147/EC and the national IUCN category from the Red List of breeding birds in Italy (Gustin et al. 2021) is reported for 230 species.
