Reduced sea ice extent and increased surface meltwater may trigger accelerated ice flow and calving front collapse, posing significant impacts on the stability of Greenland's ice shelves. However, due to limited remote sensing observations, detailed ice dynamic precursors and driving mechanisms prior to rapid calving events remain poorly understood. We conducted a comprehensive investigation of the hydrological and kinematic precursors preceding the 26 July 2017 calving event at Petermann Glacier in northern Greenland by combining high-spatiotemporal-resolution remote sensing observations with ice flow models. Time series of ice flow velocity fields during July 2017 were retrieved from Sentinel-2 observations, with a sampling interval of every other week. The ice flow velocity rapidly reached 30 meters per day on 26 July, one day prior to the calving event, which was approximately 10 times the average glacier flow speed.
