The deletion of the Staphylococcus aureus 5-bp motif, TATTT, which plays a role in regulating the icaADBC operon, induces excessive biofilm formation. Isolation of the TATTT deletion mutant of FK300 caused several mutants with a peculiar phenotype (FK300delta5bpBm) to autoaggregate upon vortexing. Genome sequencing revealed that these mutants carried mutations in icaB.
