# Ultraprocessed foods elicit distinct metabolic and neural responses when compared to non-ultraprocessed foods ## Contact Alexandra G. DiFeliceantonio — Dife@vt.edu Zach Hutelin - Hutelin@vt.edu ## Study Design - **Task**: Food auction task (4 runs: auction1–auction4) - **Scanner**: Siemens Prisma 3T, Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute - **Field map**: AP/PA EPI fieldmaps acquired for each session - **Participants**: N = 57 ## Description Brief description of the study: Participants completed 4 runs of a Becker-deGroot-Marschak auction task to assess food value while undergoing fMRI scanning. During each run, participants bid their willingness to pay between 0 and 5 USD on 28 different foods (14 UPF and 14 non-UPF) presented in a randomized order. Bids were placed on a visual analog scale with labels for $0, $2.50, and $5 USD, the cursor started in the middle at $2.50 on each trial. A modified version of the participant instructions used by Plassmann were implemented to inform participants of the task. Participants were instructed that they will see a series of food items and place a bid between $0 and $5 dollars for each item. At the end of the session, a food from one trial will be chosen at random and if they have bid higher than a randomly computer-generated price, they obtain and can consume the selected food, but the computer-generated price will be deducted from their session compensation.
