The rapid evolution of digital technology has significantly transformed education, particularly with the emergence of online learning platforms. Among these, online language learning has gained substantial popularity, offering learners flexibility and accessibility. However, maintaining learner motivation and engagement remains a critical challenge. Gamification, defined as the application of game elements in non-game contexts, has emerged as an innovative strategy to address this issue. This study explores the implementation of gamification in online language learning platforms, focusing on its impact on learner motivation and educational outcomes. Drawing upon Self-Determination Theory, which differentiates between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, this research examines how game elements—such as rewards, badges, points, and challenges—enhance learner engagement. While extrinsic motivation is stimulated through incentives like digital rewards, intrinsic motivation is fostered as learners perceive skill acquisition and personal growth. The study employs a mixed-methods approach, utilizing a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire distributed via Google Forms to gather data from participants. The findings suggest that the effectiveness of gamification depends on its alignment with learners’ needs and characteristics. Furthermore, the results highlight the importance of balancing game elements with educational goals to prevent potential distractions and ensure meaningful learning experiences. This research provides insights into the factors influencing the success of gamification in language learning and offers practical recommendations for designing gamified learning environments that are interactive, enjoyable, and effective.
