VPRS 501 Registers of Accounts

This series records the receipt of accounts by Ararat Gaol, and the forwarding of the same to the Penal & Gaols Branch for processing.The accounts were received from various contractors and suppliers, for goods such as meat, coffee, flour and bread, and for services such as repairing locks, removing nightsoil, etc.Accounts were assigned a sequential number, and their details entered in the volume: Period of service, Name of claimant, Description of claim, Amount, etc. The date the gaol received the account and to whom it was forwarded is also recorded.This series also records details of the payment of wages to employees at the gaol. These entries record the name, position and payment details for each employee. At times, further information is recorded, such as the amount of tax deducted, any sick leave taken, pay increases, etc.Payments to temporary employees, as well as to other regular providers of services to the gaol (such as doctors and chaplains) are also recorded.
