In an 18-year ongoing prospective study to elucidate the dynamics of bacterial colonization and infection of the respiratory tract in adults with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), we have established that a large proportion of patients show persistent colonization by non-typeable Haemophilus influenzae (NTHi). Analysis of the strains and metadata from this study allow us to: elucidate mechanisms by which NTHi persists in the COPD lung, assess the host effect on stability of putative vaccine antigen, and explore NTHi mechanisms of antimicrobial resistance and tolerance.
