Offshore wind is considered to be a main source of clean energy, providing
up to half of global electricity needs, and there are large plans for the
scale-up of offshore wind. However, despite the plans for scale-up, there
are large disparities in estimates of power potentials. One reason for
this disparity is too simplified treatments of wind wakes. A thorough
understanding of energy budgets within wind farms is needed to improve the
estimates of power potential and energy usage. In this respect, actual
data on power generation in existing wind farms are highly valuable. This
dataset contains half-hourly data on power production in 31 wind farms in
the North Sea for the years 2020 to 2024. The data is used to analyze the
energy budget of wind farms in the North Sea (see
https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0321528). The data is downloaded from
the Elexon BMRS data marked "Actual Generation Output Per Generation
Unit (B1610)", but is free to copy, publish, adapt, distribute, and
transmit.
